(1) New research from Notre Dame explores why social media isn't always good for us, especially if you're young and female.  Working as an educator, Carmen Papaluca observes an alarming trend with her students.

In particular, social media has a significant negative impact on the mental health of her students.  For anyone who is a regular user of social media that most of us are these days, this will come as no surprise. 

With everyone sharing their ‘highlight reels’, Carmen observes, young women find it very difficult to see their own lives or even their own bodies as good enough. 

(2) Wanting to understand more on this issue and what could be done, Carmen started her Ph.D.  at the University of Notre Dame.  The focus of his research is Instagram use among young women aged 18 to 25 years. 

One of the main findings from her work so far is that the younger female Instagram users in her study, their late teens and early 20s, found that images on the app made them feel the worst about their bodies. 

(3) However, women who are slightly older (mid 20s) feel inadequate around their work and lifestyle.  Compared to the seemingly extraordinary pictures of other people's social lives and careers on Instagram, they feel that their own lives are "less meaningful".

The blame for the perceived problems with the new technology will fall entirely on the new technology.  But if we want to find a real solution to this problem, we need to dig a little deeper. 

In other words, it's not just Instagram that's the problem.  The social pressure placed on young women that has been a part of our culture for many years is now being amplified by social media.
